Karl Benz
Introduction
In 1885, a German mechanical engineer named Karl Benz _____________ (to design) and _____________ (to build) the world's first practical automobile powered (=poháněn) by an internal-combustion engine (= spalovací motor). A year later, Benz _____________ (to receive) the first patent for a gas-fueled (=benzínové) car. It was a three-wheeler (=tříkolový vůz) called the Motorwagen.
Benz _____________ (to build) his first four-wheeled (=čtyřkolový vůz) car in 1891. He _____________ (to start) Benz & Company and by 1900 _____________ (to become) the world's largest manufacturer of automobiles. He also _____________ (to become) the first legally licensed driver in the world. What's especially remarkable that he _____________ (to achieve) this even though he _____________ (to come) from a relatively poor family.
Early Life and Education
Benz _____________ (to be) born in 1844 in Baden Muehlburg, Germany (now part of Karlsruhe). He _____________ (to be) the son of a locomotive engine driver who _____________ (to die) when Benz _____________ (to be) only two years old. Despite family´s lack of money, his mother _____________ (to do) her best to give him a good education.
Benz _____________ (to attend) the Karlsruhe grammar school and later Karlsruhe Polytechnic University. He _____________ (to study) mechanical engineering (=strojírenství) at the University of Karlsruhe and _____________ (to graduate) in 1864 when he _____________ (to be) only 19 years old!
In 1871, He _____________ (to establish = založit) his first company with partner August Ritter and _____________ (to call) it the "Iron Foundry and Machine Shop," a supplier of building materials.
Developing the Motorwagen
Benz _____________ (to begin) his work on a two-stroke engine (=dvoutaktní motor) in hopes of establishing a new source of income (=nový zdroj příjmu). He _____________ (to have to) invent many parts of the system, including (=včetně) ignition (=zapalování), spark plugs (=svíčky), carburetor, clutch (=spojka) or gear shift (=převodovka). He _____________ (to get) his first patent in 1879.
In 1883, he _____________ (to establish = založit) Benz & Company to produce industrial engines in Mannheim, Germany. He then _____________ (to begin) designing a motor carriage (=motorové vozidlo) with a four-stroke engine (=čtyřtaktní motor) based on Nicolaus Otto's patent.
In 1885, he _____________ (to drive) the car in Mannheim for the first time. It _____________ (to go) at the speed of 13 km per hour during a test drive. After receiving a patent for his gas-fueled (=benzínový) automobile, he _____________ (to begin) selling his automobile to the public in July of 1886. Parisian bicycle-maker Emile Roger _____________ (to start) to sell them as the first commercially-available (=komerčně dostupný) automobile.
His wife Bertha _____________ (to help) to promote the Motorwagen. She _____________ (to take) the car on a historic 105-km trip from Mannheim to Pforzheim to show its practicality for families. Her experience _____________ (to lead) to Benz´s adding gears (=převody) for climbing hills and brake pads (=brzdové destičky).
Later Years
Till 1893, they _____________ (to produce) more than 1,200 Benz Velos. It _____________ (to become) the world's first inexpensive, mass-produced car. It _____________ (to take part) in the world's first automobile race (=závod) in 1894, finishing in 14th place. Benz also _____________ (to design) the first truck in 1895 and the first motor bus.
In the last years of his life he _____________ (to serve) as a member of the supervisory board (= dozorčí rada) of Daimler-Benz AG until his death in 1929. At this time between years 1928 and 1932 the famous Mercedes-Benz SSK, an open two-seat car with emphasis on sporting appearance, _____________ (to build). The SSK was the last car _____________ (to design) for Mercedes-Benz by Ferdinand Porsche before he _____________ (to leave) to found his own company.

The History of Computer Numerical Control (CNC)
Computer numerical control is a modern concept in the manufacturing and production industries. But the idea of numerical control ........................... (start) when the automation of machine tools originally incorporated specific concepts of programmable logic several decades ago. In the beginning, the first NC machines ........................... (build) back in the 1940s. Slightly more advanced machines ........................... (appear) in the 1950s. These manufacturing machines ........................... (construct) based on existing tools that ........................... (modify) with motors which ........................... (design) to move the controls of the machine. These controls followed specific points that ........................... (feed) into the machine on punched (=děrovaný) tape. These early mechanisms ........................... (soon improve) with both analog and digital computers. The introduction of computer technology into the concept of numerical control ........................... (leed) to what we now know as computer numerical control.
Early MIT Research on Numerical Control
After World War II, John Parsons ........................... (research) ways to improve aircraft by creating stiffened skins for them. This eventually ........................... (leed) to a series of important Air Force research projects, which ........................... (conduct) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This research ........................... (begin) in 1949. After the early planning and research phases, an experimental milling machine (=frézka) ........................... (design) at MIT. Professor J.F. Reintjes and his team of researchers ........................... (involved) in this project.
COMPLETE THE TEXT WITH THE CORRECT FORM OF PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE.
Staples (=základy) of CNC Technology
While there ........................... (be) tremendous change in the history of CNC technology, there are a few cornerstones (=základní kameny) that ........................... (remain) unchanged. All automated motion control manufacturing machines, from bare-bones concepts of the early days to highly advanced systems today, still require 3 primary components. These include a command function, a drive/motion system, and a feedback system.
CNC ........................... (have) a long and interesting history. As technology evolves, there may be even more incredible elements to add to its history as manufacturing continues to promote the use of robotic and automated processes in nearly every field.

New technology ___________ jobs in both direct and indirect way. There are new jobs for people who design and ___________ the technology. And sometimes the whole new industries appear ___________ on the new technology.
Then, there is indirect way thanks to labour-saving ___________ when companies can do more with ___________, they can expand and maybe open new locations (=new factories). And they can lower prizes. It means ___________ may buy more. Or we can ___________ money to buy other things. For example, we can go to more sport ___________ our out for dinner more often. The process is how our standard of living has ___________ over time. And it has always required ___________ to do the jobs.
S U M M A R Y
- We HAVE BEEN NOTICING waves of hysteria because of automation for almost 100 years.
- Many manual jobs HAVE BEEN gradually DISAPPEARING.
- But we HAVE never RUN OUT OF work since that as many new jobs HAVE APPEARED:
- either directly, for example in IT industry,
- or indirectly, because companies HAVE BECOME more productive thanks to new technologies. The HAVE BEEN OPENING new factories, it means new job opportunities for people, and generally, through the times people HAVE BEEN EARNING more money which they can spend in shops or facilities that need more employees, it means new job opportunities for people again.
